Lightning Causes Apartment Fire in Durham

Posted Updated

DURHAM, N.C. — Lightning struck an apartment complex in Durham on Tuesday night and sparked a fire, city police said.

There was no immediate information on the extent of damage.

The lightning struck about 11 p.m. as a thunder storm was moving through the area.

Meteorologists had said that conditions Tuesday night could lead to some severe storms, though few developed.

The National Weather Service in Raleigh said police and weather-spotters reported three-quarter-inch hail in Nash County around 6 p.m.

The storms came after a hot afternoon in which record high temperatures for the date were set at Raleigh, Greensboro and New Bern.
