Development in Cary has exploded over the last few years. Now plans to build a new multi-theater movie complex near Crossroads shopping center has residents wondering how their town will be able to deal with the additional traffic.
A tract of land behind the Target discount store would appear to be the perfect place for a 22-screen movie theater. There's nothing else in the area, and there are only two other small theaters in Cary. While developers believe there are enough customers to support the theater, many people wonder if the already congested Crossroads Plaza can support more traffic.
Even on a weekday morning, traffic coming in and out of the Crossroads shopping center can be especially heavy. That's why the town is going to require any new developers to improve the intersection of Meeting and Walnut Streets.
The Cary Planning Department wants the developer of the movie theater to pay for two new turn lanes and additional traffic signal equipment.
"We feel that with a commitment on their part to do the designated improvements that we identified," Jim Parajon explains, "there will be an improvement to the traffic situation out there after the theater is up and running."
The developer is based out of Charlotte. It says it is willing to make the improvements, even it costs hundreds of thousands of dollars.
