Suspect Arrested In Durham Break-Ins

DURHAM, N.C. — Durham police have arrested a suspect in more than two-dozen break-ins in the past four months in southern Durham.

Officers were patrolling the Penrith neighborhood around 10:30 a.m. Friday when an officer stopped Sidney Dempsey, 21, near Sandstone Drive and found him in possession of burglary tools. Further investigation led officers to numerous stolen items, including jewelry, computers, DVDs, video games and a digital camera.

About 30 residential break-ins have been reported in the area since August. Most of the burglaries occurred during the daytime.

Dempsey, who is currently on probation for breaking and entering, has been charged with possession of burglary tools, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, breaking and entering and four counts of possession of stolen property. Further charges are pending.
