SPRING LAKE, N.C. — Two people were taken to a local hospital Thursday after a chemical leak that spilled onto a roadway.
Authorities said the leak began in a commercial truck carrying sodium hydroxide near the intersection of Highway 24 and Randolph Street on Fort Bragg at about 1:30 p.m. The truck was traveling north on Highway 24.
The chemical also spilled onto Highway 210 in Spring Lake while the truck was stopped.
Authorities said the leak was minor and a brown vinegar solution was being used to neutralize the chemical.
One person was treated and released from Womack Army Medical Center; the other was still in the hospital under observation.
Sodium hydroxide, commonly known as caustic soda, is used mainly for processes in textile manufacturing.
