Raleigh's Giant Acorn To Get Polished For First Night Festivities

Posted Updated

RALEIGH, N.C. — Crews plan to move the giant acorn, which will be dropped on New Year's Eve in Raleigh.

The acorn will go to the home of its creator, David Benson. He will polish the New Year's icon and get it ready for Dec. 31.

When it is finished, the acorn will be moved back to Moore Square Park.

During the

celebration, the acorn will drop at the stroke of midnight.

The man who dreamed up the idea of the giant acorn will not be at this year's First Night celebration. John Watkins died in November. It was his idea to have the 1,250-pound acorn sculpted.
