Posted Updated

RALEIGH, N.C. — As part of National School Bus Safety Week, transportation and education leaders want to remind everyone to keep kids safe on the roads.

This year's theme is "Flashing Red Means Stop Ahead." It is a reminder that it is against the law to pass a stopped school bus.

Earlier in the year, state troopers followed more than 1,400 school buses as part of program called

Operation Stop Arm

.

During one week, authorities cited 29 drivers for passing a stopped school bus. They also handed out 2,800 tickets for speeding.
