SPRING LAKE, N.C. — A Cumberland County couple charged with child abuse because their 1- and 2-year-old children were found alone turned themselves in to authorities Wednesday but said they thought a babysitter was with the toddlers.
James and Marcia Hunt were charged with misdemeanor child abuse. Police said a family friend found the 1- and 2-year-old children Sunday night inside their Spring Lake mobile home.
“They were not left alone. A babysitter was there when we left. We went to Wal-Mart to get hamburger meat. When we came back, they were gone," James Hunt said.
The children were unharmed, and Department of Social Services workers took them to their grandmother's home.
The Hunts were released on an unsecured bond.
