DURHAM, N.C. — Durham prosecutors Monday dropped murder charges in a 30-year-old case because, they said, a witness was proving unreliable.
Gary Bennett and Ronnie Manning had been accused a 1976 triple slaying. They were arrested in 2005.
At one point in the investigation, police got permission from a judge to dig up an old well, looking for a gun and knife used in the killings.
The men were not in custody when the charges were dismissed.
