RALEIGH, N.C. — Investigators are searching for six con-artists who duped the local American Red Cross out of debit cards meant for Hurricane Katrina evacuees.
Caseworkers in Durham granted the requests for help before a database was established. Workers discovered the false claims when they tried to cross-reference the names with past addresses.
If caught, the suspects could face state and federal prosecution.
Earlier this month, a Raleigh woman was charged with lying to the Red Cross to receive money to which she was not entitled.
Police say Tiffany Signal told the Red Cross that she was a victim of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans. She received a debit card and a 14-day stay at a hotel. Police received a tip and arrested her.
