Hurricane Affects Raleigh Convention Center Construction Costs

Posted Updated

RALEIGH, N.C. — Raleigh's new convention center is getting more expensive by the day.

Officials say Hurricane Katrina will add millions of dollars to the price tag because construction costs have increased.

The cost of concrete is now 31 percent higher -- about $5 million over budget. The escalator and elevator bids are also more expensive.

Cost increases were not included in the initial budget.

The City Council has been advised to approve contracts as soon as possible to lock in prices.
