RALEIGH, N.C. — Plan to pay more if you want to light up.
Starting today, the state cigarette tax jumps from 5 cents to 30 cents a pack.
Next year, the rate will increase by a nickel.
North Carolina had the lowest cigarette tax in the country. Now, South Carolina takes over the title at seven cents a pack.
