Overnight Accident Shuts Down Part Of Highway 15-501

DURHAM, N.C. — Police have reopened part of Highway 15-501 in Durham after an overnight accident.

Crews shut down northbound lanes of the highway near Cornwallis Road for approximately 3-1/2 hours.

Police say the accident happened just after 10 p.m. when Rene Pineda, who was driving a Mitsubishi Eclipse, lost control on the highway and hit a guardrail near Cornwallis Road.

A second car, a 1996 Dodge Neon, hit Pineda's car. That driver ran from the scene.

Pineda was trapped in his vehicle for approximately 15 minutes. He was removed from the vehicle by the Durham Fire Department and taken to Duke Medical Center by EMS crews. Pineda is being charged with DWI.

The accident is still under investigation.
