Man Who Pleaded Guilty To Girlfriend's Murder Recently Married

Posted Updated

RALEIGH, N.C. — A Sampson County man who pleaded no contest to killing his ex-girlfriend is now a married man.

Last Thursday, Derrick Canaday made the plea deal to second-degree murder charges in last year's death of Merritt Ennis.

Court records show Canaday married a Duplin County woman on the day he began serving his sentence of at least 17 years.

Prosecutors say they accepted Canaday's plea because there was not enough evidence to prove he planned the murder.
