RALEIGH, N.C. — New evidence could help in the 5-year-old murder case of an area police chief.

Rich Square Police Chief Joe White was murdered while making a traffic stop. More evidence has been recovered from a creek in Bertie County.

Authorities will not say what was found, but the search focused on the chief's missing gun.

Jason Herbert was arrested two years ago for White's murder. He has not gone on trial yet.

The district attorney's office is seeking the death penalty.
