GARNER, N.C. — Police have charged a 76-year-old woman in connection with an accident that sent two people to the hospital Thursday afternoon.

Garner police said Earline Johnson smashed the car she was driving through a brick column in front of a beauty supply store in Village Court Shopping Center. Johnson told police that she accidentally hit the gas pedal instead of the brake pedal.

Authorities charged Johnson for having no operator's license and for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

Johnson's daughter was in the front seat of the car; her husband and grandchildren were in the back seat.

Johnson and one of the grandchildren went to the hospital with minor injuries.
