Duplin County Horse Diagnosed With West Nile Virus

RALEIGH, N.C. — A horse in eastern North Carolina is this year's first confirmed case of West Nile Virus.

The 26-year-old American quarterhorse was in Duplin County. It was euthanized after contracting the virus.

The horse had not been vaccinated against the disease.

Last year, three horses were diagnosed with West Nile virus, which is spread by infected mosquitoes and can affect both equines and humans.
