CARY, N.C. — A tanker truck flipped on its side causing massive traffic backups on U.S. 1/64 Tuesday afternoon.

The wreck happened in the left southbound lane between Kildare Farm Road and Tryon Road at about 4 p.m.

The truck, which did not appear to be leaking any substance, was on its side in the median, but had been turned upright at about 5:30 p.m. Parts of the guardrail on the left lane were destroyed.

An ambulance was on the scene of the wreck, but there were no immediate reports of injuries.

Authorities told WRAL that the tanker was carrying anti-freeze and there were no leaks apparent.

The Cary Police Department said construction, combined with on-lookers, was the major cause of the traffic delays.

It is still unclear what caused the truck to overturn. Cary police are still investigating.
