81-Year-Old In Serious Condition After Car Leaves Road

Posted July 1, 2005 6:50 a.m. EDT

— Durham police are investigating a single-vehicle accident that has left an 81-year-old man in serious condition.

At about 2:15 p.m. Friday, the man, whose identity has not been released, was traveling on Dillard Street when the vehicle he was driving ran off the road and struck a fire hydrant before crossing Holloway Street and striking a fence surrounding a church, investigators said.

Durham police said neither speed nor alcohol were factors in the accident, but that the driver lost conciousness because of a medical condition.

The driver was transported to Duke Hospital, where he is listed as critical.
