CUMBERLAND COUNTY, N.C. — A 17-year-old teenager that drowned Thursday in a swimming pool did not know how to swim, the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office said.

The sheriff's office said Joshual Thomas drowned in a private residence's pool in the Aaron Lakes West area, northwest of Fayetteville.

Authorities said the victim was with his girlfriend, who did not know he could not swim. When he started drowning, investigators said the girlfriend thought he was playing, but it was too late once she realized something was wrong.

When emergency crews arrived, he was in cardiac arrest. They took him to the hospital, but could not revive him.
