HOKE COUNTY, N.C. — The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is investigating a Red Springs police officer who, officials said, shot and killed a suspect Thursday afternoon.

The incident began with a high-speed chase that started in Red Springs and ended in southern Hoke County near Antioch when officer Ricky Brewington, a 20-year veteran, shot the suspect in the face and killed him.

Red Springs police Chief Lum Edwards officers started looking for 33-year-old Stephen Chase Thursday afternoon when a woman reported that he pulled her from her car and drove away.

Chavis sped out of Robeson County and into Hoke County with two squad cars chasing him at speeds of up to 90 mph, officials said.

Police said Chavis stalled his car and leaned out of the window, pointing what appeared to be a gun at the officer. Investigators found a nail gun near Chavis' body.

Edwards said he believes Brewington followed police procedures and did nothing wrong.

Brewington is on administrative leave while the SBI investigates.
