Samuel Vance took off running Wednesday when two deputies approached him as he sat in a courtroom for a driving without a license charge. They had an outstanding warrant for Vance on a charge of assaulting a female in Lee County.
A sheriff's department spokeswoman said Vance ran from the courtroom and across a pedestrian bridge. He climbed out onto a ledge and jumped when a deputy came at him from the other side of the bridge. Vance crumpled to the ground, more than 15 feet below.
Vance was taken to Carolinas Medical Center with injuries that were not life-threatening. Once released, Lance will be taken back to a Lee County jail.
