Investigators said Edna Wilson, 67, of Sanford collided with a parked vehicle that was out of gas on the right shoulder of southbound U.S. Wilson, then pulled back onto the road and was struck by a third vehicle, driven by Jimmy Douglas, of Sanford. Wilson's car then hit the parked vehicle a second time.
Wilson and another woman in the car, Wanda Womack, were seriously injured and airlifted to UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill. The child in Wilson's car, Katherine Meier, died instantly.
Wilson is listed in critical condition and Womack is listed in stable condition. Douglas was taken to Central Carolina Hospital, but did not have any serious injuries.
A spokesman for the Highway Patrol said investigators believed the women and the child were taking gas to the parked car
