Pilot Involved In Franklin Crash Tried To Start Air Rescue Business

FRANKLIN COUNTY, N.C. — The pilot involved in a Franklin County helicopter crash tried to start a new Air Rescue company in Illinois, but it did not get off the ground.

Ben Barrick's helicopter crashed last May while he was working for the Franklin County Sheriff's Office. A passenger, Deputy Ted Horton, was killed.

Barrick started a new company called HELISTAR Air Rescue in Illinois last fall. Business associates told WRAL they could not get the state to provide them with a helicopter.

Federal investigators question Barrick's experience and the condition of the helicopter when it crashed.

The district attorney is considering criminal charges against him.
