BURLINGTON, N.C. — Burlington police are investigating the case of a baby that was abandoned near a parking lot.

Police said that at about 3:45 a.m. Monday they received a call from the secretary at the emergency department at Alamance Regional Medical Center. The woman told police she had received a call from an anonymous person that a 14-year-old had a baby and took it to the Piedmont Rescue Mission on North Mebane Street at the Alamance Pregnancy Services parking lot.

A patrol officer was dispatched to the area and after some time walking the perimeter of the building, the officer located a newborn baby, wrapped in a blanket, next to the fenced area. The baby was taken to Alamance Regional Medical Center where she is being treated for exposure.

As of Monday afternoon, the baby, which appeared to be only a few hours old, has a low body temperature but otherwise seems to be healthy.
