Chapel Hill Town Council Approves Regulations For Leaf Blowers

Posted Updated

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — The rumbling from leaf blowers will soon be a little softer in Chapel Hill.

Town council members voted Wednesday evening to limit the use of leaf blowers in the evenings.

Starting Sept. 1, people on residential properties are permitted to use the equipment between 8 a.m. and 7 p.m. during the week, and between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. on weekends. On non-residential properties within 100 feet of residential property, such equipment could be used between 4 a.m. and 9 p.m. during the week, and between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. on weekends.

Opponents for a ban on gas-powered leaf blowers said the machines are too loud and pollute, but landscapers said a ban would mean higher labor costs.

The Town Council agreed several months ago not to consider an outright ban.
