FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — A Cumberland County sheriff's deputy has resigned, following her actions related to a murder investigation.

Peggy Cook was off-duty when she took Issac Godfrey to see his dying son at the hospital.

Authorities say Godfrey's 4-month-old son fell out of a moving sport utility vehicle when Godfrey jumped out to avoid a traffic stop. The baby later died at the hospital.

Godfrey is charged with his son's murder.

Cook had been on administrative leave after the incident. Her resignation was effective on Thursday.
