HENDERSON, N.C. — A man died Sunday morning at Kerr Lake during a triathlon to benefit Relay For Life, which is a fundraising event for the American Cancer Society.

Witnesses said Wayne Stellar went under water halfway through the swimming segment of the triathlon.

Emergency workers on the scene tried to revive him but couldn't.

They believe Stellar suffered a stroke or a heart attack, which caused him to go under the water.

Stellar worked at Maria Parham Medical Center in Henderson. He had two children.
