CLAYTON, N.C. — An early-morning accident claimed the lives of two people in Clayton.

Authorities say a man and woman in a pickup truck were driving eastbound on Highway 42 when the vehicle veered off the side of the road, hit a transformer and flipped over.

Both people were ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead. The victims have been identified as Ali Tew, 34, of Raleigh, and Billy Flowers, 72, of Clayton.

The accident knocked out power for more than 1,600 customers and ruptured a gas line. Power has since been restored and crews are working to fix the gas line.

Traffic was briefly shut down in that area, but it is moving again.
