More Than 200 From Pope Air Force Base Deploy For Afghanistan

POPE AIR FORCE BASE, N.C. — More than 200 soldiers from Pope Air Force Base are saying goodbye.

The 74th Fighter Squadron leaves for Afghanistan at 2 a.m. on Sunday.

Fighter pilots with the unit fly A-10 planes, which specialize in bombing enemy ground forces.

The soldiers expect to be deployed for four months.

The last time a unit of this size deployed from Pope was in January.
