VANCE COUNTY, N.C. — An overnight fire damaged an old school building in Vance County.

Fire crews responded to the blaze around 2 a.m. at the Old Kerr Lake School, off State Route 39 in the Townsville area. Several crews spent hours battling the fire. Firefighters were able to save the gym, the cafeteria and classroom addition, but the main building is gone.

"It's more than a personal loss and use of the building," said Ralph Pegram, who used to be principal at the school.

Authorities said they are investigating the cause of the accident.

"One of the firemen said he was the first one here and it was burning in three places on the back," Pegram said. "He didn't understand it and of course, without any electricity, rags and any combustible things of that nature, I didn't understand why it burned either."

There are no reports of any injuries. The building was not in use.
