The first attempt happened on Friday at about 4:45 p.m. when a woman walking across the parking lot of the Borders bookstore on Walnut St. was stopped by a carload of people asking for directions.
Police said one of the six passengers in the car grabbed the woman's purse through the car window.
The driver of the brown, four-door car tried to speed away as the woman got caught in her purse. The woman was dragged across the lot before the purse dislodged.
Police said the woman broke her collarbone in the incident.
A second purse-snatching attempt was reported to have occurred shortly after in the parking lot near the Hecht's department store at the Cary Towne Center. Police said they believe the same carload of people asked a woman for directions and tried to steal her purse.
