Bulls Still Looking For First Win

Posted Updated

DURHAM, N.C. — Durham finished two games on Friday night, but neither of them finished the way they'd hoped.

Toledo scored six runs before the Bulls even got on the board, and it was enough to win the suspended game from Thursday afternoon and the regularly scheduled Friday night game, 7-5 and 5-3 respectively.

Thursday's game was suspended by rain with the score tied at five apiece heading into the 10th inning, but the Mudhens wasted no time plating two to take the first game. Sandy Martinez led off with a double, then after pinch-runner Kevin Hooper came in, Chris Shelton singled to right to put runners on first and third. Gookie Dawkins then hit a one-out single scoring both runners and giving the Mud Hens the win.

RHP Chris Brock (0-1) took the loss for the Bulls, allowing both runs in one inning of work.

The second game didn't start much better as RHP Doug Waechter (0-1) was shelled for four runs in the first inning, including a home run by LF Marcus Thames, his second of the season. Thames didn't record an out until his second at bat of the game, his sixth of the season.

The Bulls scored two runs in the fifth inning and another in the ninth, but it wasn't enough to overcome the Mudhens. RHP Chris Spurling (1-0) got the victory, pitching three perfect innings in relief. RHP Craig Dingman picked up his first save of the season with a scoreless ninth.

The Bulls and Hens meet again on Saturday at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park. Tickets are available at www.durhambulls.com or by phone at (919) 956-BULL.
