RALEIGH, N.C. — Attorney General Roy Cooper wants businesses to do more to guard against identity theft.
Cooper is applauding a move by Blue Cross Blue Shield to drop Social Security number from identification cards, but he said it is time for other businesses and government agencies to do the same.
Cooper said businesses should only ask for your Social Security number if they really need it. If businesses do, he said they better protect it.
"People that you deal with, businesses that you deal with, have an incredible amount of information, so it is critical that they protect that information," he said.
Legislation should be introduced in the General Assembly next week.
