DURHAM, N.C. — A Durham elementary school student has been diagnosed with meningitis.

Officials say the student attends Fayetteville Street Lab Elementary School.

The health department director said the child was diagnosed last week with meningococcal meningitis and is being treated. About 12 other people who had close contact with the child are also being treated as a precaution.

The school was notified Monday and sent letters home with students. The health department does not think anyone else has any risk of infection.
