WILMINGTON, N.C. — Authorities on Monday found the body of a 13-year-old who went missing while swimming in New Hanover County two days earlier.

New Hanover County Sheriff's Sgt. Jerry Brewer said the body of Shandon Tyre Wright Jr. was found about a mile south of Snow's Cut shortly after 9 a.m. Emergency personnel discovered the boy in the water near Sugar Loaf sand dune in Carolina Beach Park.

Wright disappeared about 1:40 p.m. Saturday while swimming with his mother, father and 3-year-old brother just west of Snow's Cut Bridge. Brewer said Shandon's younger brother became distressed in the water, and the father retrieved him.

As the father pulled that child out, Brewer says the older one went into under the water.

Crews search during daylight hours Saturday and Sunday to find the boy. The search had resumed Monday morning.
