Man Involved In Johnston Standoff Faces Mental Evaluation

Posted Updated

JOHNSTON COUNTY, N.C. — A man involved in an armed standoff with authorities in Johnston County is undergoing a mental evaluation.

Officials say 37-year-old Matthew Sexton locked himself in his house on Shotwell Road Monday after his wife got papers to have him involuntarily committed.

Authorities said Sexton was armed, but he did not hold anyone hostage. Hours later, a SWAT team was able to gain entry into the house and apprehend Sexton without incident.

Sexton's wife has since sworn out a domestic assault on a female warrant against him. Authorities have yet to determine what charges Sexton will face in connection with the standoff.
