RALEIGH, N.C. — Radio transmissions and 911 tapes released Thursday shed more light on a Raleigh police shooting that killed a man accused of assaulting his girlfriend.
Freda Narron called 911 early Tuesday morning and told police her boyfriend, Navon Ligon, had assaulted her. Police said when they confronted him, Ligon lunged at them with a knife. Officer Craig Haines shot and killed Ligon.
Some witnesses in the neighborhood off Atlantic Avenue told WRAL they did not see Ligon lunge at the officer with a knife. They said he was actually walking away when he was shot.
"I would have never dreamed that something like that would have happened," neighbor Lori Vizza said.
The State Bureau of Investigation and Raleigh police are investigating.
