DURHAM, N.C. — A judge granted bail Thursday to a mother charged with murdering her adopted daughter.

Melinda Wilkins, 40, was arrested Tuesday afternoon. Her adopted daughter, Melissa, was abused in August 1995 and was left with permanent brain damage.

Wilkins pleaded guilty to felony child abuse in 1995 and served 2 years in prison.

Melissa died last year from complications related to her injuries. The judge set Wilkins' bond at $15,000 and ordered her to stay away from young children.
