CREEDMOOR, N.C. — A man accused of shooting his wife of nearly 40 years has been found competent to stand trial.

Investigators say William Ray shot his wife, Alene, in the head in December 2003. Police say Ray tried to kill himself in prison twice while awaiting trial.

After an evaluation at Dorothea Dix Hospital, he has been deemed competent.
