ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. — A Rocky Mount man will spend at least 10 years in prison for mistakenly shooting and killing his mother, authorities said.

Brandon Terrell Norwood, 20, was arguing with his mother's boyfriend a year ago outside the family's Rocky Mount home and took a shot at him with a handgun, authorities said. Norwood missed the man, and the bullet struck and killed 40-year-old Barbara Davis, authorities said.

Norwood pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the case. He originally was charged with first-degree murder.
