DURHAM, N.C. — For Durham residents, the fee to own a vehicle just went up.
The General Assembly passed a bill to increase the car fee from $5 to $10.
Durham's fee had been one of the lowest in the state. The increase is expected to bring the city an extra $650,000 every year.
City leaders said they hope to use the money to give senior citizens free bus service -- and to add more bus routes to and from public schools.
