Deserter From Fort Bragg Wants To Stay In Canada

Posted Updated

RALEIGH, N.C. — A Fort Bragg soldier who fled to Canada does not want to come home.

Specialist Jeremy Hinzman asked Canada's Immigration Board to protect him as a refugee.

Hinzman, a practicing Quaker, went AWOL in January after the Army denied him conscientious objector status.

The 25-year-old served in Afghanistan. If he returns to the United States, he will be prosecuted as a deserter.
