RIEGELWOOD, N.C. — (Nov. 16) Eight people were killed and 19 others injured the week before Thanksgiving when a tornado swept through the small Columbus County town of Riegelwood.

The Nov. 16 storm, with winds at an estimated 200 mph, cut a 1.8-mile path of destruction in the county, ripping through a cluster of mobile homes and an adjacent neighborhood of brick houses shortly after 6:30 a.m.

An estimated 100 people were displaced by the storm. County officials estimated about $500,000 in damages.

The tornado was part of a devastating line of thunderstorms that killed 12 as they swept across the South.
