Broadway Man Accused Of Trying To Kill His Father

BROADWAY, N.C. — An 80-year-old Broadway man was released from Central Carolina Hospital in Sanford on Monday after his son allegedly tried to kill him.

Harnett County authorities believe 57-year-old Alton Burgess, of Leaflet Church Road in Broadway, beat Mack Burgess with a walking stick. Sheriff Larry Rollins said investigators do not know if the cane belonged to the victim.

Alton Burgess was arrested and charged with attempted first-degree murder, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, simple assault and communicating threats. He was placed in the Harnett County Jail under $75,000 bond.

Mack Burgess reportedly suffered a cracked kneecap.

According to Rollins, the father and son have a history of disputes.
