PITTSBORO, N.C. — The water is flowing again in Pittsboro after a dry day.

Around 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, a water main broke on Main Street downtown. The taps started running again just before 6 p.m.

Town officials advised all residents to boil their water for five minutes to kill any organisms in the water. The advisory remains in effect indefinitely.

The pipe that broke was more than 50 years old. In addition, the town had increased water pressure early Tuesday to fill up a new water tank.

About 1,000 people were without water following the break. Restaurants were ordered closed for the day.

Crews put in a new line before the water started flowing again.
