DURHAM, N.C. — A Bunn woman suffered critical injuries Wednesday afternoon when she lost control of her motorcycle and fell more than 30 feet off an Interstate 540 bridge near Interstate 40.

Gena Tavano Burrows, 51, of Bunn, was riding a 1993 Honda Shadow 600 motorcycle east on I-40 shortly after 2:30 p.m. When she turned onto the entrance ramp to I-540, which crosses over I-40, she lost control of her motorcycle and ran into the three-foot cement bridge facing on the right side of the road.

Burrows slid approximately 100 feet along the bridge facing before dropping 31 feet to a dirt area beneath the bridge. The motorcycle remained on the bridge.

Burrows suffered numerous broken bones. She was taken by LifeFlight helicopter to Duke University Hospital.

Investigators do not know what caused Burrows to lose control of the motorcycle. Excessive speed did not appear to be a factor.

Anyone who witnessed the accident is asked to call Durham police investigator C.R. Rodrigues at
