Cary Storeowners Hope Town 'Signs' Off On New Proposal

Posted Updated

CARY, N.C. — The debate over business signs in Cary has some shop owners taking on City Hall.

Sandra Horton, who owns a shopping plaza on Chatham Street, said she is only allowed one sign. A town ordinance limits the words, size and colors on business signs. She said prospective tenants are having trouble visualizing how they would attract customers without a sign.

"We're all just mom-and-pop businesses that are trying to make a living," she said.

After years of debate, Cary is now considering relaxing the rules. A new proposal will allow shopping centers to list all of its tenants.

The proposal goes before the planning and zoning board in April.
