RALEIGH, N.C. — A federal judge sentenced a man who had admitted taking a 12-year-old Rocky Mount girl as far as Iowa before releasing her to more than 30 years in prison Monday.

Phillip Daniel Denkler, 28, pleaded guilty to interstate transportation of a minor to engage in sex and interstate transportation of a stolen vehicle. He was accused of taking the girl from her home last August and raping her during a trip across the country.

Denkler has been convicted of sexual offense twice before and served eight months in prison. In addition to an active sentence, US District Court Judge James Dever ordered that Denkler will remain on supervised probation for the rest of his life.

Denkler was sentenced to 360 months for kidnapping and 12 months for vehicle theft.
