Durham Road Reopens, Power Restored Hours After Morning Wreck

Posted Updated

DURHAM , N.C. — A road that was closed for much of the day has reopened in time for the evening commute.

The 4100 block of Fayetteville Road at the intersection with Larchwood Drive reopened around 2:30 p.m., according to Durham police.

The road -- located between Cornwallis Road and MLK Boulevard -- was closed following a wreck that knocked down a utility pole and knocked out power around 6 a.m.

Duke Power estimated 495 customers lost power immediately following the wreck. Power was restored to all customers by mid-afternoon.

Two vehicles were involved in the wreck. Police said the driver of a red pickup truck tried to pass a white car where the two-lane road merges into one. The vehicles collided, and both went off the road.

The truck hit the utility pole, and power lines came down.

The driver of the pickup truck was expected to be charged with driving left of center and failure to yield right of way.
