Judge OKs Sapikowski Defense Request

Posted Updated

HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. — The lawyer of a Chapel Hill teenager accused of killing his parents wants a copy of a psychological exam done on the teen's father.

Superior Court Judge Wade Barber approved Public Defender James Williams' motion requesting a Colorado court to provide all the records from James Sapikowski's divorce from his first wife, including a psychological exam that was performed years ago.

Barber agreed to send a letter to the court clerk or the presiding judge asking for a copy of the records. If the Colorado court complies, Barber will review the records to determine whether any of the information is relevant and should be provided to attorneys.

In May, Adam Sapikowski confessed to killing his parents, authorities said. The 17-year-old was indicted on two counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of his parents, James and Alison Sapikowski. Police found their bodies in their Chapel Hill home.

Last month during a court hearing, Sapikowski's attorney suggested the teenager may have been a victim of abuse.
